Description
Maverick Pink Pappusgrass is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows 3-5’ tall at maturity with pink-purple tinged seedheads. Pink Pappusgrass is a very common and important native grass in south, west, and west-central Texas. It is found on most soils, except for extremely sandy sites. Maverick is good forage and provides critical wildlife cover on desert rangelands and in brushy savannahs. It is tolerant of slightly saline and alkaline soils. Pink Pappusgrass is a staple of native seed mixes for range and wildlife habitat restoration plantings, right-of-way seeding in South and West Texas, and has excellent coloration and drought hardiness for wildscaping and ornamental plantings.
Maverick is comprised of 7 populations collected from the South Texas Plains by the Texas Native Seeds Program and the USDA NRCS Kingsville Plant Materials Center. Pink Pappusgrass is a co-dominant bunchgrass of many south and west Texas range sites. It establishes easily from seed and is relatively fast to establish compared to most native grasses.
